How to write a method statement that gets approved

  • Write the steps in the order the work happens. Arrival, set-up, each stage of the work, clear-up and hand-over.
  • Put each control at the step where it applies. "Isolate and prove dead" belongs before the step that touches the circuit, not in a list at the end.
  • Name the people and cards. Who supervises, and which cards the operatives hold (for example CSCS, IPAF, PASMA).
  • Say which permits you need and who issues them on this site.
  • Keep it site-specific. Access routes, working hours, nearby occupants and the nearest A&E.

A method statement is normally paired with a risk assessment, which together make a RAMS. Use the free RAMS template to create both at once.

Questions

What is the difference between a method statement and a RAMS?

The method statement is the step-by-step sequence of work. RAMS adds the risk assessment: each hazard, who might be harmed, the risk rating and the controls.

Can I change the order of the steps?

Yes. Each trade starts with suggested steps in a sensible order. Drag a step by its handle or use the up and down buttons, edit the wording, delete steps or add your own.
