Monthly visual check

Scheduled for the first of each month, for the responsible person or a nominated person.

  • Each extinguisher in its place, visible and unobstructed
  • Pins and tamper seals intact, no signs of use
  • Pressure gauge in the green, low (reported) or no gauge (CO2)
  • No obvious damage, corrosion or missing parts; instructions legible
  • Service label shows a basic service in the last 12 months
  • Photo of the extinguisher point, defects and who checked

BS 5306-3 service record

For the technician, one record per extinguisher.

  • Location or extinguisher ID
  • Type: water, foam, CO2, dry powder, wet chemical or water mist
  • Manufacture year and capacity
  • Service type, weight or pressure within limits
  • Seal, pin, hose, horn and label checked
  • Correct type for the risk and properly sited and signed
  • Result, next basic service due, photo and technician signature

Service intervals in the template

The service template notes the BS 5306-3 intervals: a basic service every 12 months, an extended service (discharge test) every 5 years for water, foam and powder extinguishers, and an overhaul every 10 years for CO2 extinguishers. Confirm them against your fire risk assessment and maintenance contract.

Part of a wider fire safety record

Extinguisher checks sit next to the fire alarm logbook, emergency lighting tests and fire door inspections. Failed items can become remedial actions with an owner and a due date, and the hot works permit on the same job asks for an extinguisher at the point of work.

Questions

Who can do the monthly check?

The monthly visual check is designed for the responsible person or someone they nominate. Servicing is for a competent technician.

Can I record each extinguisher separately?

Yes. The service template records one extinguisher per entry, with its location or ID, type and capacity.

Can I edit the templates?

Yes. Both are starting points you can change and schedule for your sites.
