What the checks are based on

The checks follow the routine checks in the government's guidance for Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022: no replaced non-fire-resisting doors, letterboxes, damage or alterations to the door, frame and wall, glazing, hinges and ironmongery, intumescent strips and smoke seals, gaps of no more than 4 mm, self-closers that close the door fully from any angle, and doors not wedged open. We added a signage check, which many sites ask for.

Sources

These are simple visual checks for responsible persons and their contractors. They are not a specialist fire door survey, and they don't certify a doorset. Where a check finds a problem, the repair should be made by a competent contractor as soon as reasonably practicable.

Questions

Who can carry out these checks?

The GOV.UK guidance says the checks are simple and visual, and that caretakers, managing agents and maintenance staff can carry them out with the right instruction. Repairs should be made by a competent contractor.

What's the maximum gap around a fire door?

The guidance for these checks says gaps should be no more than 4 mm, with the gap under the door as small as practicable.

Can I check more than one door?

Yes. Use "Save door and start the next" after each door, then download one PDF with a summary and a page section per door.

Does this apply outside England?

The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 apply in England. The checks themselves are useful anywhere, but check the rules where your building is.
